Important current warningTürkiye’s General Directorate of Meteorology expects very heavy rain in Istanbul from 09:00 on Friday, 16 October until 23:59 on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Risks include flooding, water accumulation, landslides, lightning and transport disruption.

If you are planning to visit Istanbul over the next few days, reports of heavy rainfall and flooding may understandably feel worrying—especially if you are travelling with children, arriving for a short layover or visiting the city for the first time.

At Book Private Istanbul – Private Tours & Airport Transfers, we want guests to stay informed, prepared and safe. This page offers practical guidance based on current official warnings, but it is not a real-time safety clearance.

What happened in Istanbul?

Istanbul experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall on 14–15 October, causing flooding, water accumulation, road disruption and major traffic delays in several districts. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s disaster coordination centre, AKOM, reported rainfall totals far above the city’s normal October levels in some locations.

Conditions can vary considerably between districts. A route that appears clear in one part of Istanbul does not mean that every road or neighbourhood is safe.

Can you still visit Istanbul?

Some sightseeing may remain possible where local conditions, attraction access and official guidance allow. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and Sultanahmet are close to one another, so a carefully adjusted walking route may sometimes be more practical than unnecessary driving.

Indoor attractions can be useful alternatives during ordinary rainfall. During severe weather or active flooding, however, visitors should avoid non-essential travel and never enter flooded streets, underpasses or areas closed by authorities.

Our local approachWe assess the actual route, not only the general forecast. Plans may be shortened, delayed, changed to indoor visits or postponed when conditions are unsafe.

What about airport transfers?

Heavy rain can produce sudden delays on routes connecting Istanbul Airport (IST), Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) and the city centre. Road conditions and journey times may change quickly.

Our commitment to booked guests

Your safety comes first. For guests who have booked private tours or airport transfers with us, we are monitoring conditions and will communicate necessary operational changes.

Where conditions permit, we may adapt sightseeing routes to reduce unnecessary outdoor exposure. If severe weather makes an activity unsafe, we will discuss realistic alternatives. No sightseeing experience is worth taking unnecessary risks.
